No redress to the farmer in this budget - JVP MP JVP Parliamentarian S.K. Subasinghe, addressing a public rally under the JVP's Propaganda Program of 10,000 Public Rallies at Hingurakkgoda, Polonnaruwa on last Monday ridiculed the UNP claim of providing fertilizer subsidy under the current budget proposals. Explaining the fertilizer subsidy of Rs.150.00, MP Subasinghe said the UNP Government by this year's budget has increased the price of a bag of fertilizer from the present Rs.350.00 to Rs. 875.00. The proposed fertilizer subsidy of Rs.150.00 will only go to reduce the impact of the price hike, thereby making a bag of fertilizer to cost Rs.725.00 to the farmer, he said. "Today the marketing of their agricultural produce is a big problem to the farmers. Privatization of the CWE has toppled down the entire state machinery that was intended to purchase the farmer's agricultural produce. At the moment the UNP Government is conspiring to introduce a Water Management Bill by next January. Water, which is the most invaluable natural heritage of the farmer will be available to him only for a sum, once the Act is implemented," stated MP Subasinghe. Meanwhile, a JVP media release yesterday stated that the JVP has complained to the Pothuhera Police that in the night of December 08, around 9.00 p.m. a gang of UNP activists in the company of Ministers Johnston Fernando and Indika Bandaranayaka held out threats of murder on JVP members. According to the media release this has happened near a police post at Katupitiya junction in the Mawathagama Electorate. The alleged gang had pulled down and set fire to cut-outs, banners and decorations, erected for the JVP Propaganda Program of 10,000 Public Rallies, it said. JVP Propaganda Program of 10,000 Public Rallies that commenced on December 02 will continue till December 15. |
