by Ranga Jayasuriya A soldier in Jaffna on Tuesday afternoon fired at a youth whom he said had attempted to lob a hand grenade at him in a rare shooting incident since the implementation of the truce agreement. The bullet which missed the youth injured a commuter who was hospitalised. The LTTE said the soldier had fired at an unarmed newspaper seller when he refused to leave the place. Military Spokesman Colonel Sumeda Perera said the youth distributing leaflets near the EPDP office had attempted to lob a hand grenade at a soldier who went to body check the youth."He had pulled a grenade from his pocket and tried to lob the grenade at the soldier. The soldier fired at self defence," he said. He said the soldier was later taken to police. He was expected to be produced before court yesterday. "Even he has fired in self defence, we need a legal statement in this regard," he said. The shooting triggered a mini protest in Jaffna with an angry crowd of civilians blocking the police from taking the soldier to the police station. Police fired into the air to disperse the crowd which pelted stones at the police.
