Indian soldier killed in firefight JAMMU, India, Monday (AFP) An Indian soldier was killed in a gunbattle with suspected Islamic miliants in restive Indian Kashmir overnight, an army source said Monday. The firefight erupted when soldiers at a checkpost tried to stop three militants in a jeep at the Akhnoor bridge, 25 kilometres (15 miles) west of Kashmir's winter capital Jammu late Sunday. The three rebels, who were dressed in police uniforms, opened fire as one of the soldiers approached the vehicle to verify their identities, the source said. The soldier died on the spot. |
