Second International Run for Peace in Vavuniya

The Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena has decided to conduct the second International Run for Peace in Vavuniya instead of Kurunegala on June 19, 2004.

The Minister has taken this decision to shift the venue to enable more runners from the Northern Province to take part in the run. In addition it will make it easier for runners from Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa to take tart in the peace run which is being organised under the theme Games for Peace to help in the Peace Process initiated by the present government.

The International Run for Peace is being organised by the Ministry in collaboration with the Asian German Sports Exchange Programme.

The run has been initiated by two German University students Tobias Rottenbach and Torben Hingst to bring about lasting friendship and unity among the two main communities in Sri Lanka.

The first International peace run will be held in Colombo as scheduled on June 12, 2004. 400 runners from Europe and 100 from Japan and China will take part in the two runs.
