Sri Lanka to take part in South Asian Soccer Sevens

Sri Lanka will take part in the first ever South Asian International Seven-A-Side Football Championships in Kathmandu, Nepal from December 8 to 10, 2003.

Already India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan have confirmed their participation and Sri Lanka is hoping to send a 12-member squad for the competition which is being organised by the Asian Seven-a-side Football Federation which is affiliated to the World Seven-a-side Football Federation based in the United Kingdom.

Seven-a-side football is very popular in Europe. the rules are similar to normal football except the off-side rule which is ignored. The matches are of 60 minutes duration and even mixed teams (men and women) could play. The tournament is being organised to promote the game among Asian countries.

The tournament co-ordinator for Sri Lanka is Gabriele Mery (21) an Italian soccer referee who is presently residing in Sri Lanka. Mery is also the secretary to the Vice-President of the Asian seven-a-side Football Federation.

Men's or women's soccer players from Sri Lanka who are interested in representing Sri Lanka in the South Asian soccer sevens in Nepal are requested to contact Gabriele Mery on telephone 032 22 54888. The players will have to meet their air fare to Nepal in addition to 150 dollars for accommodation and meals.
