Under this new agriculture project, 146 acres of paddy lands and 329 acres of arable lands in the Rambukwella village will be developed benefitting 144 farmer families, Agriculture and Livestock Minister S.B. Dissanayake said. Following a request by the Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Chapter Most Ven. Rambukwelle Sri Vipassi Thera from Minister Dissanayake, the Ministry has commenced development activities of the village. The Department of Export Agriculture will provide instructions and guidelines to the project. As the first stage of this agricultural resurgence project, the Ministry has educated farmers in the Rambukwella village. Dissanayake commenced the project's second stage on October 22 under the patronage of the Most Ven. Rambukwelle Sri Vipassi Thera by distributing agriculture equipment, plants and fertiliser to farmers. Over 100,000 plants including pepper, coconut, mango, papaw, rabutan, cinnamon and teak were distributed among farmers. In addition, 426 pieces of agriculture equipment and 600 Kgs of fertilizer stock were also provided to farmers. Dissanayake said during the past few years, farmers could not obtain a satisfactory price for their harvest. Following the UNF Government assuming office, steps were taken to offer concessionary prices for agriculture products and safeguard farmers. Arrangements have been made to oversee crop cultivation in the future by producing only the quantity required by the country. If there is any surplus production, it will be expected to obtain a higher income to farmers, he said. The Minister said youth have the ability to obtain a good income by moving towards self-employment ventures. They should determine to properly develop and cultivate their fallow lands and home gardens which would directly lead them to get a good income. "Everyone should act collectively irrespective of politics, cast, creed or any other petty differences to develop a village. As long as we remain divided on the basis of political parties and political colours, a village cannot be developed. Therefore the unity and collectiveness should be in the village for ever," he said. |
