Finance Minister K.N. Choksy has appointed S.M. Tennakoon as Chairman of the Welfare Benefits Board. The appointment of the Chairman and Board members was done in consultation with the Constitutional Council. The Welfare Benefits Board was established under the new Welfare Benefits Act. Tennakoon had earlier functioned as Government Agent in Matale and Kandy districts and served later as Secretary to the Ministry of Mahaweli Development, Forestry and Irrigation and Central Province Chief Secretary. He will also be the Commissioner, Welfare Benefits. The other four members are T.P.G.N. Leelaratne, former Secretary, Ministry of Internal and International Commerce and Food; Dita Wimalasiri, former Secretary, Ministry of Public Reforms; M.M. Munsoor, a former member of the Public Service Commission; and K.C. Logeswaran, former Ambassador of Sri Lanka in South Korea and advisor to the Ministry of Finance. The new Law was enacted by Parliament to provide the legal framework for the payment and administration of all welfare benefit schemes of the Government, and to set up a transparent selection process by which only qualified recipients will be identified as beneficiaries. The Board will function from November 1. |
