by Ananda Kannangara

Sunil Welikala, the husband of a popular female singer of yesteryear Shiromi Fernando died in Toronto, Canada recently after a brief illness. A bank executive by profession, he was 47 years at the time of his death.

Speaking to the Daily News from Canada, Shiromi who was loved by Lankan music fans for her favourite songs such as Konda Namagena, Amma Pembara Amma and Balal Hamine said that her husband who was a tower of strength to her had given every encouragement for her to continue with her music career and even to perform in Sri Lanka, although they had been permanently domiciled in Canada since 1987.

Shiromi started her music career at the tender age of 10 and at one time played with the fabulous "Dharmaratna Brothers". Most of her songs were composed by her uncle Melroy Dharmaratna who led the Dharmaratna Brothers band.

He leaves his son Chamil (23) and the daughter Hashani (18). Shiromi said that she wished to share her grief with her fans and other well-wishers in Sri Lanka. Her address is No. 29, Funday Bay, BLV. Unit 73, Toronto, Ontario, M1 W3 A2, Canada.
