Young achievers

Willingness to take risks does wonders in life - Jayamin Pelpola

There is no doubt that different thinking and willingness to take risks can do wonders in one's life. The best example is 20-year-old Jayamin Pelpola.

by Chamitha Kuruppu

Among millions of students worldwide who follow CIMA, a 20-year old Sri Lankan recently clinched the record of being the youngest associate member of CIMA in the world.

Jayamin Pelpola, the youngest ACMA in the world says different thinking and willingness to take risks has enabled him to do wonders in life.

Having obtained his primary education at Nalanda College, Colombo Jayamin later attended Gateway International where he completed his London O/L and A/Ls within two years.

Jayamin says 'time' is one of the main aspects in one's life when deciding the future. "I was very much concerned about the time taken to complete school education. If I followed the ordinary system I will be still studying for my CIMA," says Jayamin adding that his decision to sit the London A/Ls enabled him to finish his studies three years ahead.

In 1998, at 17 Jayamin completed his school education and decided to commence CIMA.

He was awarded the Sri Lankan prize for CIMA Stage One in 1999.

Having completed CIMA Jayamin decided on part-time employment at ABS, where he studied CIMA.

While working at ABS Jayamin secured a placing at Seylan Bank Asset Management as an Accounts and Operation Assistant.

My duty was to study financial accounts and report them to the Central Bank. It was a tough job, but the knowledge I gained from CIMA contributed immensely to perform well in my duties. Jayamin's excellent performance got him a job at Shadowline, a joint venture of MAS Holdings Private Limited as a Merchandiser.

Though his qualifications were in the field of management accounts Jayamin's new job as a merchandiser had nothing to do with accounting. "I wanted different exposure, though it is a so-called marketing job it has more to do with CIMA," says Jayamin. Playing the role of a cluster leader at Shadowline young Jayamine deals with retailers in USA.

This courageous lad is also an associate member of CIM. Since I started CIM after completing CIMA I was exempted from CIM Stage One and two papers of four in Stage Four, he said.

Good effective leaders have always inspired young Jayamin. He extends his gratitude to R.A.T. Alles, Principal of Gateway International for his lessons on commitment and discipline. "All I have achieved today speaks volumes of his commitment to make us good citizens," says Jayamin.

He speaks fondly about Dilan Goonaratne of Seylan Bank and Udena Wickremesinghe CEO, Shadowline for their support to make his career a success. "I am lucky and happy to work with bosses who are also associate members of ACMA. It helps."

He is thankful to his family for the support they have extended throughout his life. If they didn't help me I wouldn't have taken correct decisions at the right time, says Jayamin.

"Career-wise I look forward to provide the maximum contribution to the company I work at present and education-wise I will be starting my MBA within the next six months, "says Jayamin.

How does this young achiever rate Sri Lankan youth? The present generation has good potential. Attitude and commitment of Sri Lankan youth is a plus point when compared to other countries. "Most youngsters are willing to accommodate everyone's ideas and respect different opinions," he said.

There is no doubt that this lad, who has excelled in studies has unique methods in studying. It is very important to understand the syllabus and what the examiner expects, says Jayamin.

What does all these mean to young Jayamin? This is only the beginning. There is a long way to go. I believe that I cannot go this journey alone.

Therefore, I am open to advice. More than achieving goals my hope is to become a good human being and share my knowledge with others, says Jayamin.
