Two dead, 31 hurt as bomb explodes in Bombay bus

BOMBAY, Tuesday (Reuters) A bomb exploded on a bus in Bombay late killing two people and wounding 31, government officials said.

"This blast has definitely been caused by a terrorist group but we still do not know which group is involved," Kripashankar Singh, junior home minister of the Maharashtra state, where Bombay is located, told Reuters.

"It was quite a powerful bomb, which was placed under the seat in the rear of the bus," he said.

Police said they had stepped up security in the state after the explosion.

Witnesses said they were terrified by the deafening blast. "I was at home when I heard a very, very loud explosion. When I ran out I saw a badly damaged bus. People trapped inside the bus were bleeding profusely," said Subhash Gawand, a taxi driver. Police said the toll could rise as three people were critically injured.

In May, 250 crude bombs were discovered near Bombay. Police said they belonged to an offshoot of an outlawed Pakistan-based militant group fighting Indian rule in Kashmir and said it planned to use them to attack the city.

A wave of blasts killed 14 people in Bombay in December and March.

The bomb exploded at 9:00 p.m. (1530 GMT) as the bus drove near a telephone exchange in Ghatkopar, a northeastern suburb of Bombay.

The blast ripped through the rear part of the bus, shattered all its windows and damaged another bus and a motorcycle that were passing by, police said.

Police cordoned off the blood-splattered part of the street where the bomb exploded while forensics experts sifted through pieces of glass and mangled metal late into the night.
