CR in runaway 45-5 win over police

The Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club turned in a dazzling display of open rugby to score a runaway 45-5 win over Sri Lanka Police on Sunday at Police Park.

The red shirts had a large share of possession from the line outs and set scrums with Viraj Prasantha getting the better of vis-a-vis in the set scrums and Buddhika Thalagampola and Roshan Perera holding sway in the line outs. They set their three quarters in motion at every turn which saw centre Charles Laisui breaching the police defence time and again with some power-packed runs in the first half while winger M. J. Mushtaq made several daring runs in the second half one of which ended in a try.

It was the policemen who opened scoring through a try by centre Nilusha Fernando in the fourth minute. The red shirts snatched the lead when Charles Laisui made a break and slipped out a pass to second rower Buddhika Thalagampola who scored under the posts to give Roshan Peiris an easy kick at goal.

A few minutes later centre Charles Laisui made another daring run before slinging out a pass to second rower Roshan Perera who was backing up to score under the posts. Ten minutes before the breathercentre Charles Laisui made a power-packed 40 metre run and scored under the posts and Roshan Peiris converted to make it 21-5. On the stroke of half time Flanker Lotewa Nagei scored mid left and Roshan Peiris added the extra points to make it 28-5 at 'lemons'.

Midway in the second half winger M. J. Mushtaq made a thundering 60 metre run down the left flank to score mid left. Roshan Peiris made no mistake with the conversion. Ten minutes later Winger Kishan Musafer put the finishing touches to a three quarter move to fall over by the right corner flag for an unconverted try. Just before the final whistle Flanker Lotewa Nagei scored an unconverted try to give CR and FC a resounding 45-5 win.

Kandy crush Havies

Defending champions Kandy Sports Club despite fielding a depleted team due to injuries to several top players went on the rampage to rout Havelocks Sports Club by 54 points to 5 at Nittawela on Sunday.

The lads from Kandy had an abundance of possession from the set scrums and line outs through the slick hooking of Mohamed Buksh and excellent line out jumping of Asoka Jayasena and Neranjan Ranasinghe and they made maximum use of the good ball that came their way by setting the three quarters in motion at every opportunity.

The lads from Kandy crossed the park club's goal line nine times through Winger Danushka Pushpakumara (three), centre Chamara Vithanage (two), second rower Asoka Jayasena (one), centre Ifahie Tema (one), No. 8 Tavita Tulagaese (one) and skipper Sajith Mallikarachchi (one) of which three were goaled by full back Nalaka Weerakkody who also dropped a goal from 35 metres out.

CH annihilate Army

The Colombo Hockey and Football Club came up with a stupendous performance to annihilate the formidable Army Sports Club by the staggering margin of 69 points to 17. It was 'Man Mountain' Fred Moe from Samoa who stole the limelight in the first half powering his way to touch down four times. The other two tries were scored by wingers Dinesh Kumara and Yuganthara Karunaratne which gave the CH a commanding 36-10 lead at 'lemons' with Kenyan Centre Ian Simiyu scoring both tries for the soldiers.

The second half was marked by a superlative display by Fijian flanker Kinijoji Rakata (who replaced Fred Moe) and scored three scintillating tries while compatriot Jim Bolokoro scored the other two tries to give the lads from Maitland Crescent their biggest win over Army in recent years. The only points for the soldiers in the second half came from a penalty try converted by centre Kapila Knowlton. (R.S.)
