Mohamed The Welimada Town Development programme prepared by the Urban Development Authority under the guidance of the Ministry of Western Region Development on the direction of Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe, was inaugurated on 27th July by M. H. Mohamed, Minister of Western Region Development and Bandula Gunawardena, Minister of Rural Economy and Deputy Minister of Finance, on the invitation of Ravindra Samaraweera, Minister of Social Welfare, and Member of Parliament for Badulla district. Under this programme a new bus stand, a three-storeyed market complex, office of the Pradeshiya Sabha and an economic centre will be constructed at a total cost of Rs. 192 million. K. V. Dharmasiri, Director General of UDA said that on the direction of Minister Mohamed, UDA will be contributing Rs. 10 million for the programme. Addressing the Janahamuwa, Minister Mohamed said that the last government kept on planting foundation stones, and he had to find the resources to complete these projects. For example, after he took over, he was able to complete a number of projects including the Hambantota bus stand, world market in Fort, Bodiraja complex in Pettah, and Royal Plaza in Borella. He said further that the Nuwara Eliya bus stand will be opened on August 11. Although we got an empty Treasury, the UNF government took steps to complete all development projects. A programme to develop Uva-Paranagama will also commence soon on the request of Upali Samaraweera, MP. A large gathering including the Maha Sangha, H. M. Jayatillake, Chairman of Pradeshiya Sabha, Rehab J. Ariff, Private Secretary to Minister of Western Region Development Faizul Khalid, Media Secretary and Mrs. Seetha Samaraweera, Private Secretary to Minister of Social Welfare, participated. |
