Those who enter public service should have intelligence and warm heart - Minister Lokubandara

The title of Justice of the Peace will be much more recognized in the future with relevant regulations formulated. Bearing this in mind, rather than glowing in your position it is important that you glow through your performance as a Justice of the Peace, said Minister W.J.M. Lokubandara, making his address at the handing over of appointments to 91 Justices of the Peace.

On the recommendation, and request of Prof. G.L. Peiris, Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion, Minister of Constitutional Affairs, selections to the positions of JPs were made considering individuals who have been outstanding in their services rendered to the public, in the religious, medical, educational, social, cultural, business, sports and other fields. Accordingly, the appointments were handed over by Ministers Lokubandara and Prof. G.L. Peiris, at a ceremony which took place at Visumpaya.

Minister Lokubandara said when Minister Peiris entered politics we were happy that an erudite scholar and an intellect had arrived but we were sad that he was not on our side. This was during the government of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in which Minister Peiris was Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

The day he presented the Bribery and Corruption Act will not be forgotten. The Parliament was held spellbound, with the English and Sinhala presentations made, one no better than the other.

Parliamentary democracy goes along with words and Parliament is a place where all come together in communication for consensus. The correct word has to be spoken at the correct time. Those who have the ability to conduct speech are rare. Prof. Peiris is blessed with this ability and blessed enough to enter Parliament with such capability.

In a way, the JP position can be compared to a Bodhi (Bo-tree). There are different types of Bodhis today. The Bo-tree in the temple could be a branch of the Jaya Srima Bodhi. There are some Bodhis that no one would worship. The JP post is something similar to this. Public respect could be gained only in the way these positions are handled.

The positions we are in today, open the way for us. It decides to which world we would ultimately belong. Those who enter public service should have the intelligence coupled with warm hearts.

When one comes to you for some service, without just sitting tight, you should realize that he or she has come to you to get some service done, and act promptly.

Today's society is such that humanity keeps fading off day by day. Rupees and cents takes control and have taken hold of the society. In a society such as this, JPs have a significant role to play. Always think of the opportunity you have been availed of, to serve mankind. These appointments have been made on the recommendation of Minister Peiris, therefore, the recommendations could be easily endorsed, as he would never recommend the wrong person for this jobs.

Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said: The work carried out by Minister Lokubandara during the past 18 months is very commendable and beneficial to society. into six areas.

Present on this occasion were those who received appointments as JPs and their relatives, Dayasiri Jayasekera-Private Secretary to Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, and Nishantha Pushpakumara-Coordinating Secretary to the Minister, Ministry of Constitutional Affairs.
