Indian banker to deliver lecture at Central Bank

Mrs. Ranjana Kumar, Chairperson and Managing Director, Indian Bank and Director, United India Insurance Company Ltd., Chennai will be in Colombo tomorrow at the invitation of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

She will deliver a lecture on "Restructuring and Overcoming the Odds: True Story of a Public Sector Bank" at the Centre for Banking Studies, Rajagiriya at 4.30 p.m. tomorrow. The lecture is open to the public. She is due to deliver another Guest Presentation on "Management of Non-Performing Assets" to Senior Officers of Commercial Banks and the Central Bank at the Central Bank of Sri Lanka at 10.00 a.m. on August 1.

Mrs. Kumar joined the Bank of India in 1966 and worked in various states and in different capacities. She was elevated as General Manager in 1995 and posted as Senior Vice President and Chief Executive of US Operations based in New York from 1995 to 1999 and assumed charge as Executive Director of Canara Bank from 1999 to 2000 and was designated as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) in 2000. She took charge as CMD of Indian Bank, selected by a special committee constituted by the Government of India and Reserve Bank of India in view of the then position of the Indian Bank, which was very weak.

Immediately on taking charge as CMD, she drew up a Comprehensive Strategic Revival Plan for the Bank to be carried out within three years between 2000-2003, and got it approved by the Reserve Bank and Government of India. During this period, the bank showed an impressive performance with all-round improvement in key functional areas. She received a number of awards such as "National Banker Shiromani Award", "Vocational Excellence Award" and the "Banker of the Year 2002" award on June 12 in Mumbai.

She is also a lecturer at the Staff College, Reserve Bank of India, Chennai and other training institutions in India. Kumar's areas of specialisation are Financial Sector Reforms, Management Stategies, Micro Finance, Human Resource Management and Public Sector Banks.
