Bus with 35 overturns

A bus carrying 35 people from Polonnaruwa to Aralaganwila overturned yesterday close to the 7th mile post when its front wheel tyre burst, Aralaganwila Police said. Hospital sources revealed that 21 people were admitted to the Polonnaruwa Base Hospital following the incident with one passenger in a critical condition.

According to Police, at the time of the mishap the bus was travelling at normal speed.

After the tyre blew up, the bus had gone off road and had crashed on to a nearby tree and overturned on the rebound, Police said.

Container driver killed in 'tipper' crash

A driver of a container lorry was killed on the spot when a "tipper" moving at high speed crashed into the parked container on the Colombo-Chilaw highway. The incident took place around 3.00am yesterday close to the railway crossing in Galkanda junction. The container lay parked following a breakdown.

Negombo Police said that following the breakdown, the driver and the assistant decided to rest under the container and fell asleep later until a shower had forced the assistant to move to a nearby shelter. But the driver had refused to move, Police said.

Due to the slippery road conditions the "tipper" carrying 23 tonnes of gypsum from Colombo to Puttlam had collided with the parked container, the impact forcing it into motion crushing the sleeping man under it .

The driver of the "tipper" who had fled after the incident was later arrested by Negombo Police while he was receiving treatment at the Negombo Base Hospital.
