A very large and distinguished gathering of over 550 people attended the finals of the All Island Best Speakers' Contest 2003 held on Saturday, May 31 at the Grand Ballroom of the Host Hotel, The Colombo Plaza. This contest was organised by the Colombo Toastmasters Club. A distinguished Panel of Judges comprising DTM Dr. Dilip Abayasekara, Vice President, Toastmasters International and President Designate 2005 (Chairman), Mohammed Adamally, Angela Seneviratne, Tony O'Brien and CTM Yusuf Jeevunjee selected Dilrukshi Fonseka, a 26-year-old, former Holy Family Convent student as the winner of the 13th AIBSC. She carried away the Bartleet Challenge Trophy presented to her by Eraj Wijesinghe, Chairman of the Bartleet Group of Companies. Her prepared speech was titled "The Business of Saving the World", while her impromptu speech was titled "Marriage' - the Best of Institutions'. The first runner-up was 22-year-old businessman Ishraq Wahab while Marissa Jansz, a 26-year-old student was the third runner-up. The other two finalists were 21-year-old Dinal Edirsinghe and 19-year-old Niran Joshua Anketell. The winner also received a cash award of Rs. 100,000 together with a years free membership to the Colombo Toastmasters Club. The other finalists received valuable gift packs. Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Ravi Karunanayake and Mrs. Karunanayake were the chief guests while American Ambassador Ashley Wills who is the patron of the club and Madam Wills were the guests of honour. The Minister who has been a very regular guest at this contest was very much impressed by the standard of the contest and immediately made an annual financial commitment of Rs. 500,000 to the Colombo Toastmasters Club towards the promotion of communication and leadership skills such as this contest. The Master of Ceremonies, CTM Niranjan de Silva gave an outstanding performance and kept the audience in fits of laughter. The scorer for the contest was Toastmaster Hussian Moosajee and the Timer was Toastmaster Keith Raymond. |
