Alokapooja at Dighavapi Cetiya

The historical Dighavapi Cetiya consecrated by the visit of the Buddha will shine in brilliance on the night of Poson Full Moon Poya on June 14 and 15 when the "Alokapooja" sponsored by the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation begins to illuminate the sacred dagoba with one hundred thousand electric bulbs. The illuminations will be switched on by Health, Nutrition and Welfare Minister P. Dayaratne at 6.00 p.m. on June 14. A number of dignitaries including Ministers and Parliamentarians are expected to attend.

Religious observances will be conducted throughout the Full Moon Poya day under state sponsorship, and a Dansala to provide free meals and soft drinks to the devotees has been organised by the employees of the Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Welfare.

After a long lapse of time due to the war situation in the area, the Poson celebrations were organised for the first time this year under the guidance of Dighawapi Viharadhipathi Ven. Nannapurawe Buddharakkhitha Nayaka Thera and under the patronage of Health, Nutrition and Welfare Minister P. Dayaratne, the President of the Dighawapi Restoration Council.
