COLOMBO, Friday (AFP) - A Sri Lankan prisoner died after falling into a cauldron of bean soup he was cooking at the country's main prison here, an official said Friday. The 27-year-old man was stirring the large pot when another cook slipped on the slimy prison kitchen floor and crashed into him on Monday, two days before he was due to be freed. The man went straight into the boiling cauldron, the official said, adding that it was a common practice to employ inmates in the prison kitchen. The official said the victim, serving time for a drug-related offence, was rushed to the prison hospital where he died. A Colombo Magistrate who held an inquest ordered prison authorities to ensure basic hygiene at the prison kitchen. |
