PA condemns doctor's strike

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The People's Alliance yesterday condemned the trade union action of the GMOA describing it as an unfair tactic.

"We cannot approve this islandwide strike of the doctors.

Whatever political differences there are between the Government and the Opposition, the PA as the opposition requests the GMOA to immediately report for work and later discuss their problems with the Government," PA Parliamentarian and former Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told the PA weekly media briefing yesterday. He said the opposition will also raise this question in Parliament by urging that the Government should intervene to provide the rights of doctors. However, the PA does not approve this present trade union action taken by the GMOA.

According to the statement made by the Health Minister, nearly Rs. one billion is needed to pay the arrears while Rs. 500 million is required annually to cater the demand of these doctors. But the Government has no ability to find this money, he said.

The PA is not pleased with the present situation created by the doctors because the innocent patients have to undergo untold suffering due to this ongoing strike.
