"Poson Poya is an important day in the Buddhist calendar. It was on a day like today that we as a nation were blessed with the inspirational message of the Enlighten One. It was the day Mahinda Maha Thera brought Buddhism to our land; along with the teachings of Gautama Buddha we also inherited a grand and invaluable culture. A culture that served as the foundation for a society nurtured on the Panchaseela and refined with virtues such as Mettha, Karuna, Muditha, and Upekka," President Chandrika Kumaratunga said in a Poson Poya Day message. She further said the language, literature and the arts and craft which are our proud possessions today, are the direct outcome of the social reformation which began with the arrival of Mahinda Maha Thera. Our Buddhist culture has its moorings deep rooted in the teachings of the Buddha. The benign influence of Buddhism enabled us to march forward with strong determination as one nation. Sadly such virtues are on the decline today. Our society which once upheld human rights, individual freedom, mutual respect and the most needed quality of Ahinsa has now weakened and is wrought with corruption, terror and hatred. On this Poson Poya Day our endeavour should be to regain the culture of the days of yore, based on the teachings of Gautama Buddha, and re-humanize our society. May the blessings of the Triple Gem be upon all Sri Lankans. |
