Singapore celebrates SARS victory

SINGAPORE, Sunday (AFP)-Singapore celebrated its removal from the global blacklist of SARS-affected areas over the weekend, but the government is not letting its guard down following the disastrous relapse suffered by Canada.

The resurgence of SARS in Toronto, the worst-hit city outside Asia, served as a reminder that Singapore must stay vigilant after being taken off the World Health Organization (WHO) list of areas with recent local infections.

"Remember that this problem is a long-term one, and until SARS is fully eradicated, there's always a danger of it coming back," said Trade and Industry Minister George Yeo.

Singapore was removed from the list after going 20 straight days - double the incubation period of the virus - without a fresh local infection.
