Home Affairs Minister to write to Western, NCP Governors

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

The holding of office by two Chief Ministers and the membership of certain JVP MPs are in doubt as Minister of Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government Alick Aluvihare will send letters to the Governors of the Western and North Central Provinces to take appropriate action following the Supreme Court judgement on Uva Province Chief Minister Samaraweera Weerawanni."After sending the letters to Governors we will go to courts," Minister Aluvihare told the Daily News.

"We will study the Supreme Court decision and send letters in a few days to the Governors of the Western and North Central Provinces to take appropriate action," Aluvihare said.

Consequent to the Supreme Court decision, some of the JVP MPs functioning as members in Provincial Councils are also in the trouble as they were neither elected nor listed. They have been appointed after the resignation of elected members on party orders.

Meanwhile, a JVP Spokesman said they are seeking legal advice in this regard now. North Central Province Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake and Western Province Chief Minister Reginald Cooray were not available for comment.Coordinating Secretary to Chief Minister Dissanayake Sarath Bandara told the Daily News that the Chief Minister believes that the Supreme Court decision on the Uva Province Chief Minister does not affect him as there is no direct court order preventing him from functioning as the Chief Minister of the North Central Province.
