Royal trounce Rajans 45/0

by Jiffrey Abdeen Kandy Sports Corr.

Royal College put up an inspiring display to trounce Dharmaraja College by 45 points (5 goals, 2 tries) to win in their inter school rugby match played at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium, Kandy yesterday.

At half time Royal were in command leading 33-0.

Royal exploded into action almost with the kick-off when their forwards took play deep into Rajans territory and flanker Palitha Wickremasinghe broke off to score close to the posts. Full-back Shihard Badhudeen added the extra points.

Rajans resisted briefly for about 15 minutes and had the Royalists in check.

But it was only a matter of time before the Royal scoring machine went into action and their three quarters moved the ball to score two tries in quick succession through winger Ravith Wickremasinghe and winger Lakshman Dissanayake and full-back Shihad Bahudeen added the extra points to one of the tries for Royal to lead 19-0.

Royal scored again through winger Lakshaman Dissanayake when he picked up the loose ball and went over the line and came around to touch down behind the post. Full-back Bahudeen goaled the try.

Just before the half-time centre Rajitha Jayasundera sliced through the defence virtually unchallenged to score under the post. Full-back Shihad Bahudeen added the extra points. Royal led 33-0 at half time. After resumption Rajans played to a different pattern and had the Royalists under check. They tackled hard and did not allow the speedy Royal three-quarters to run with the ball.

Midway in this half Royal were able to add to their tally with centre Kasum Wijesekera giving the finishing touches to a three-quarter movement to touch down by the left corner flag.

The best try of the match came in the 25th minute of the second-half when winger Lakshman Dissanayake made a powerful run and when brought down, scrum-half Nirmal Siriwardene picked the ball and slung a pass to No. 8 Prabath Udugampola who powered his way to score under the posts. Bahudeen added the extra points. A. Rankothge refereed.

Royal won the under-17 match 43-0 and Dharmaraja beat Royal in the under-15 match 43-0.
