Kandy blasts Navy 70/3 in one-sided game

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Corr

Kandy Sports Club took the wind off the sails of Sri Lanka Navy to record an easy 70 points (5 goals, 5 tries, 1 penalty) to 3 (1 penalty) win in their Caltex League 'A' Division rugby tournament match played at Nittawela on Saturday. At half-time, Kandy lead 10-3.

Frayed tempers and the 'Sailors' adopting rough house tactics in the second half saw them loose grip of the game which they had in the first half. They went for the man and referee Dilroy Fernando had no hesitation in ordering one of the Navy players off the field and they played with only 12 players in the dying stages of the game, with 3 players sent on 'Sin Bin'.

Navy started the game on a blistering note with their forwards playing will and the Kandy team had little anger to their ferocious play. In fact they opened scoring through a penalty in the 3rd minute of play and thereafter could do nothing where scoring was concerned. It was in the 20th minute of the first half that Kandy opened the scoring through a penalty put over by Nalaka Weerakoddy which equalled the scores.

But Navy's daring continued to upset Kandy who were never subjected to this kind of pressure before this season.

Their third row especially Malewana and Ravi Jayasuriya gave the Kandy defence a torrid time.

Kandy were able to go into the lead first time in the 38th minute of the first half when their threequarters moved the ball and winger Pradeep Liyanage gave the finishing touches. Full back Nalaka Weerakoddy added the extra points. But the second half with the Kandy team playing with the word prone to one sided as the sailors appeared to rattle and gave away tries.

Their bustling play of the first half was missing as Kandy piled on the points. Navy could have restricted the Kandy team from going on a rampage had they concentrated on the game more. Soon after resumption, Malith Silva who came as replacement pounded his way to score far sight Kandy led 15-3. This was followed by another try by Indrajith Bandaranayake for Kandy to gain control of the game, leading 20-3.

Kandy kept piercing the Navy defence regularly and piled on the points through tries scored by Dhanushka Pushpakumara (1), Ifate Tema (2), Lago Tulagese (1), Indrajith Bandaranayake (1), Jeewa Galgamuwa (1), Chaminda Yapa (1), Kapila Silva (1), Nalaka Weerakoddy (1) who also goalled 5 more tries.
