Sumith Dahanayake was Ananda's hero

by Chris Dhambarage

The Milo Schools under 19 league tournament have reached only its second week but already there has been a major upset combined with a couple of individual contributions.

Ananda's stunning victory over S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia certainly gives an indication of what is in store for the rest of the season. The lad who scored the matchwinnig try for the Anandians was Sumith Dahanayake a newcomer to the scene.

The former Richmondite ruggerite was not aware that Monday, May 23, 2003 would be one of his most memorable days on the field.

The speedy wing three quarter joined Ananda College recently after learning his basics and groundwork in his home town where he represented Richmond College with distinction. He would have scored many tries for his former school in the past but none of them really matched the class of his beautiful piece of work which he performed against the powerful Thomians.

Sumith Dahanayake turned the form book upside down within a matter of few seconds and the newcomer had emerged as an instant hero for the Anandians. The Anandians had recorded their previous win over S. Thomas' College way back in 1988. That means the entire present Ananda outfit would have been toddlers when Asela de Silva's marauding Anandians outplayed the Thomians 14-4 at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Another outstanding ruggerite Mohamed Renaz who helped St. Peter's College clinch the Milo Schools 'A' division league crown last year is doing it all over again. The dynamic wing three quarter who scored a total of 33 tries is back in business and has seven tries to his tally in just two outings. He would have been a completely different player had he remained at St. Sylvester's College Kandy.

But in the past two years he has performed some wonderful things on the field helping St. Peter's College make the headlines everytime they play a match. He will be next up against Trinity College in Colombo and already the Peterites are gearing up for this important fixture.

Not surprisingly the Peterite coach Sunanda Fernando and the master in charge Sunil Aponso along with their video crew travelled all the way to Kandy to see the Trinitians take on Vidyartha at the Pallekele Stadium on Thursday. The Peterites will certainly study the video carefully during the next couple of days and one player who would take more interest than any one else will be Mohamed Renaz.
