Today is World No Tobacco Day : Scary facts and figures of smoking by Dr. J. B. Kelegama, Sri Lanka Cancer Society and the National Council for Mental Health There are nearly one billion smokers in the world today and they smoked
about 5,500 billion cigarettes in 2000 or over 15 billion a day - nearly
1000 cigarettes for every man, woman and child on the planet. One in three
cigarettes smoked in the world is smoked in China. Alarmingly the number
