by Ranil Wijayapala The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission is not satisfied with the way the LTTE acted with regard to the release of Police constables in Trincomalee as they did not abide by their own undertaking, SLMM Deputy Chief Hagrup Haukland told the Daily News yesterday. He said the LTTE promised the release of the two Police constables who were taken into custody yesterday morning and later postponed it to this morning (Saturday). "We are not satisfied by the way the LTTE acted as they do not abide by their own statements", Haukland said. The two Police constables attached to the Serunuwara Police station who went to Kankuweli area to hand over summons were reported missing and later it was found that they were taken into custody by the LTTE. When inquired by the SLMM, LTTE political wing leader of the Trincomalee area,Thilak had promised the release of two Police constables yesterday morning. "This did not happen as scheduled", Haukland added. Meanwhile, the SLMM yesterday sent a third letter to the LTTE in Kilinochchi insisting the immediate release of the sailor in their custody. Sailor I.P.A.K. Dharmadasa attached to the Sri Lanka Navy in Horowpotana, was reported missing while he was on a training exercise in Palampattar an area 13 kilo meters South West of Trincomalee. While on this mission he was armed with his personal weapon a T56, two T56 magazines and one rifle sling and other equipment. Haukland said the LTTE is violating the ceasefire agreement by not releasing the sailor and by going against their own statements as they agreed at the fifth round of peace talks to follow the SLMM rulings with regard to the release of persons. |
