Mercedes - Benz Trophy : Sri Lanka Country Finals 2003

The 12th Mercedes-Benz Trophy Sri Lanka Country Finals teed-off last Saturday, the 24th of May, at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC). Over 220 participants took part in this year's tournament and never in the history of RCGC, a tournament had a patronage of such a large number of players. Nirmal Hettiarachchi was the winner of group A, A. Iddamalgoda was the winner of Group B and Amal Cabral was the winner of Group C. It was a perfect day for golf and the weather couldn't have been better.

Diesel & Motor Engineering Company Ltd, the general importer and distributor for Mercedes Benz in Sri Lanka has sponsored this event for the 12th consecutive year. Mercedes - Benz Trophy Sri Lanka country final was conducted according to the following handicap groups over 18 holes and the winners and runners ups who qualified for the Asian Finals are as follows:

Group A: 00-12 - Winner: Nirmal Hettiarachchi, Runner up: Mohan Ratnayake

Group B: 13-20 - Winner: A. Iddamalgoda, Runner up: Kumar Boralessa

Group C: 21-24 - Winner: Amal Cabral, Runner up: Shevain Arsakularatne

The above winners and runners up will be participating in the Asian Finals courtesy of DIMO. The Asian Finals are scheduled to be held in Gold Coast Australia. Winners from the Asian Finals will have the opportunity to take part in the World finals, which is scheduled to be held in Stuttgart, Germany later this year.

Out of last years' participants at the Asian Finals, Captain Navin de Silva qualified for the World Finals.

Last year 22 teams from 36 countries representing all the continents participated in the World Finals. At the inception, in 1990 only a couple of hundred golfers mainly from European countries took part. But last year 40,000 players took part in 36 countries.

Throughout the history of this tournament, the Mercedes - Benz Trophy has built a reputation to be on par with the Mercedes - Benz marque. Hence, the popularity and participation has been increasing from inception.

The winners of the other attractive prizes for participants on offer were, Nearest to the pin (9th Hole) - M. J. Mansoor Best Stableford Score - Gerad Fernando. Youngest player - Praveen Dias.

The award ceremony was held at the clubhouse in the evening with an environment set for relaxation. Thus after an intense day of competition, the participants let themselves go and enjoyed the fun and frolic of the evening till the night was through, making it a day to remember.
