Five teams clash for top spot

The top-notch cricket tournament in the country - the Singer - MCA Premier League will lose its gloss due to Sri Lanka cricketers touring the West Indies in June 2003.

The tournament is scheduled to get under way on 8th June with five teams participating, another notable drawback for the tournament.

However, this is a significant milestone for Singer (Sri Lanka) Ltd, who completes a decade, of continues sponsorship of MCA's premier division.

The worse affected team in this year's tournament will be the defending champions HNB, who will be sans, Kumar Dharmasena, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Prabath Nissanka, Kaushal Lokuaratchi and Dinusha Fernando.

Former league winners, Seylan Bank will be minus Mahela Jayawardena, Chaminda Vaas, Kumar Sangakkara and Naveed Nawaz.

Sampath Bank will lose Marvan Atapattu, and Janashakthi will be without Muttiah Muralitharan and Dharshana Gamage.

The fifth team, last year's knock out runners-up, John Keells group will be at full strength.

The MCA has set their sights to a well deciplined tournament, all matches having a match referee with more powers vested on them, a first class panel of umpires nominated before hand by the ACU and a member of MCA's Deciplinary Committee laise with the referee and umpires at the venues.

Messers Graham Labrooy and BC Cooray has been invited by the MCA Cricket Development Committee to conduct a half day awareness programme for these referees, the panel of umpires and Captain's and Secretary's of the firms participating teams, on Saturday, 31 May, from 8.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m., at Hotel Renuka. The programme will cover the job description of a Match Referee, code of conduct for Umpires, Players and team officials.

The league stage which includes ten matches will be played at NCC and Moors on 8th, 15th, 21st, 22nd and 28th June.

At the completion of the round-robin stage, the team emerging on top of the points table will be declared as the league, champion.

Special awards for the series will be Best Batsman, Best Bowler and Man of the Series. Singer for the first time, will be offering a brand new 21 inch Singer Colour TV for the Man of the Series.
