by Florence Wickramage An internationally known veterinary surgeon Dr. Harald Schwammer will be in Sri Lanka in early July to conduct two training programmes in medical care of elephants for veterinarians, veterinary students and elephant mahouts. The programme will be in the form of a two-day workshop and will be held at the Zoological Gardens, Dehiwela for veterinarians from the Zoological Gardens, Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Department of Animal Production and Health. The second workshop will be held for mahouts at the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. The two-day workshop will cover all aspects and methods of elephant management and care in zoos and elephant orphanages. Dr. Schwammer will deal on safety aspects for both the keepers and elephants. He will demonstrate methods of elephant foot care and skin care too. The Biodiversity and Elephant Conservation Trust (BECT) has organised several veterinarian training programmes in addition to the programme planned for July. The Managing Trustee of BECT Jayantha Jayewardene feels that Dr. Schwammer's training programme be invaluable for our veterinarians to gain experience and knowledge in overall elephant care. Dr. Harald Schwammer is the Vice Director, Zoologist of the Vienna Zoo and his programmes are aimed at those engaged in the scientific management and care of elephants.
