The 23rd national Mahapola Scholarship awarding ceremony will be held today at 2.30 p.m. at the Mahapola Campus of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT), where Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake and Tertiary Education and Training Minister Kabeer Hashim will be the chief guests, states a press release issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. Four hundred fresh undergraduates who excelled in the national rankings of the G.C.E. A/L examination will receive their scholarships at the national ceremony and the other recipients will receive their awards at separate ceremonies held in district levels. As there were two batches of students admitted to universities this year, the Mahapola Board of Management says that 8,200 scholarships will be awarded at the first round which include 7,200 undergraduates and 1,000 other students pursuing their tertiary education at vocational training institutions. The second batch of 7,200 scholarships will be awarded in the second round at a latter date, the Mahapola Board of Management said. The Mahapola scholarship scheme was started in 1980 as a brainchild of the late Lalith Athulathmudali with the view to assist university undergraduates with financial needs and in its 23 years of operations, the scheme had awarded more than 100,000 scholarships. |
