SLSRFA's decision to change tournament format hailed by rugby coaches by Chris Dhambarage The Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association's decision to change the format of the Milo schools rugby tournament has been welcomed by a number of top senior rugby coaches and administrators. The tournament which is sponsored by Nestle Lanka Limited will kick off next month with the participation of 28 schools in the division one championship. This year the top seven teams have been included into one group and it will be named as the Milo 'A' division league tournament 2003. This means all top teams will have the opportunity of playing each other and they will also qualify to participate in the President's Trophy knock out tournament. The new setup of course was a suggestion made by Isipatana College even though it was originally proposed by former Havelocks ruggerite and Sri Lanka youth coach S. W. Chang four years ago. In fact Isipatana themselves were at the receiving end last year where they remained unbeaten but were deprived of the Milo 'A' division league title due to a technical error. This led to a stir in the schools rugby scene which resulted in Isipatana pulling out of the President's Trophy knock out tournament. The teams competing in the 'A' division are the reigning Milo league champions St. Peter's, defending President's Trophy champions Royal, Isipatana, S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia, Wesley, Dharmaraja and St. Anthony's. The notable absentee among the top seven is Trinity College Kandy who have been demoted into the Milo division two tournament following their non participation in last years competition. The teams participating in the Milo 'B' division tournament are Zahira, Kingswood, St. Sylvester's, Ananda, Thurstan, Vidyartha and St. Joseph's. The 'C' division tournament will comprise of D. S. Senanayake, Carey, Prince of Wales, Mahanama MV, Nalanda, Lumbini MV, Maliyadeva College Kurunegala. The 'D' division tournament will include Richmond, Science College, St. Aloysius, St. Benedict's, St. Anne's, Sri Sumangala MV and Royal Panadura. |
