Meeting on Muttur riots Civil leaders from the Eastern town of Muttur and Muslim political leaders today called upon the President to discuss the recent ethnic conflict and unrest in their area. Muttur in the Trincomalee District was the scene of anti Muslim riots earlier this month where five people were killed, extensive damage caused to property and 2,500 rendered homeless, a press release from the Presidential Secretariat stated. The Minister of Defense Tilak Marapana, the three service commanders and the Inspector General of Police were present at today's meeting at President's House. The President directed that the Police and Military presence in the area to be increased, and a special riot squad be posted in the region to quell any future untoward incidents. |
