President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday warned, that if the government failed to prevent the unreasonable and unjust interference and political pressure applied, on the Police Department she would be compelled to seriously consider the public appeals for her intervention, to halt the developing trend, the President's House announced. In a letter to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in this regard the President states that over the past year under the Minister in charge of the Police Department the Police had been reduced to a helpless state where it has increasingly become an institution of oppression against the people which has been borne out by several recent incidents, . In such an environment the attempt by the Minister of Interior to present a Bill for the Prevention of Organised Crime, has been viewed by many as a ruse to turn the country into a Police State the letter stated adding that the Minister concerned had so far failed to control the deteriorating situation, according to the media release by Presidential Media Director General Janadasa Peiris. She therefore informed the Premier to turn his attention to points she had made and submit a report to her on the steps he propose taking to restore order in the police Force, the release stated. |
