As the Minister of Employment and Labour, I wish to take this opportunity to outline the proposals already taken to protect the rights of the working class in the country. I think that all pledges I promised to the people last year have been fulfilled. We established 178 job centres (Rekiya Piyasa) throughout the country. We also fulfilled many more requests made by workers during the course of last year. Among them the prohibition on employing children under 14 years. The industrial Act was also amended for the benefit of workers. The national productivity policy was also implemented last year with the objective of improving the country's productivity. Labour reconciliation boards were introduced in free trade zone areas in order to solve many labour disputes within a very shorter period. We also established additional labour offices in the districts of Matara, Kalutara, Hatton and Kegalle to help the workers to get their EPF benefits in a convenient manner. My Ministry has taken the challenge of providing jobs to the unemployed youth in Sri Lanka and abroad and to fulfil this task the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment has implemented a special job providing program to our workers in countries such as Italy, Singapore, Korea etc. We also established a "Vigamana Piyasa" hostel at Katunayake for providing temporary lodging to workers leaving the country for foreign employment. The final batch of workers who lost employment due to the Gulf War in 1990 were also paid compensation. We are now awaiting for everlasting peace in our whole Nation. As we know our nation underwent a lot of hardships in the past. So with the dawn of peace the Government has many more plans to improve the living conditions of the entire labour force in the country. |
