More than 800,000 people expected to participate in May Day rallies

At least 800,000 people from many parts of the country are expected to be present in Colombo today to participate in the May Day rallies and celebrations to be held in the Colombo City Limits, Colombo, Deputy Mayor Asath Sally told at a media briefing yesterday.

He said the Police have finalised security arrangements in order to conduct an incident free May Day and the state and private bus companies will also provide a round the clock bus service for the convenience of people who visit Colombo.

Apart from the Government's May Day rally, conducted for the first time in a festive mood the People's Alliance and the JVP will conduct their usual May Day rallies in Campbell Park and the BRC grounds respectively.

The main attraction is today's May Day celebrations will be the two musical shows. The first show will commence at 6.30 with the participation of four Indian artists such as Anuradha Shri Ram Karthik, Mahalaluxmi and Sivamani. The Popular band Apsara will provide music.

The mega musical show which commences at 9.30 pm will feature 15 of Sri Lankas leading artists along with the popular band Marians.

Meanwhile, 36 manufacturing companies which are under BOI will sell garments and other products at duty free prices.
