Indices decline, turnover Rs124.5m

The Colombo Bourse indices recorded a decline yesterday as the ASPI dropped to 824.4 points from 826.2 the previous day and the Milanka index to 1,427.6 points from 1,431.7. However, turnover levels continued to remain healthy totalling Rs124.5 million for the day.

According to Bartleet Mallroy Stockbrokers Limited this was due to the foreign selling of 395,400 shares of NDB at Rs 86.50 and the foreign buying of over 1.5 million shares of Kotagala Plantation at Rs 7.75.

Large volumes of Distilleries shares and significant volumes of Commercial Bank shares, which changed hands contributed significantly to the day's turn- over.

Foreign activity was concentrated on the buying of Kotagala shares and the selling of NDB shares. Foreign purchases and sales accounted for 15% and 30% of the day's turnover. A net foreign outflow of Rs 18.3 million was recorded for the day.

Among the top five gainers were Samson International, Ceylon Holiday, Vanik Incorporation and Ceylinco Housing.
