Karpov Chess C'ships from May 2 By Richard Dwight The Anatoly Karpov Chess Club which has been in the forefront of promoting chess in the island has for a considerable length of time been responsible for conducting coaching camps and workshops in chess in the different provinces involving many students and teachers in most districts. It has also in addition held advanced coaching camps for school children conducted by Igor Verichagin, the Russian International Arbiter in 2000 by Djuri Stephen the Yugoslavian Grand Master in 2001 and by Manuel Aaron, the first Indian International Master in 2002. The club also takes pride in that it was able to hold annual tournaments islandwide without a break since 1998 and the added satisfaction of players participating in Moscow and Chennai between the years 1999 and 2002 with some of them winning trophies as well. These were observations made by the President of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club, Sunitha Wijesuriya when addressing a media briefing last Thursday at the Russian Centre in connection with the final event of the all island Age Group Chess Championship commencing on the 2nd of May and going on till the 4th of May at the Isipatana College premises. Earlier the club conducted the all-island age group chess tournament in eight provinces viz: Western, Central, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, North Central, Wayamba and Eastern. All the provincial champions and some Indian players will pit their wits against each other in the finals which is being sponsored by Lanka Orix Leasing Company. The first round clash of champions will commence on May 2 from 8.30 a.m. to 12.00 noon. The second round on the same day from 2.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. The third round will be on May 3 from 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. while the fourth round commences at 2.00 p.m. and concludes at 6.00 p.m. on the same day. The fifth round will be on May 4 from 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and the awards ceremony will be on May 4 at 3.30 p.m. at Isipatana College Main Hall with Russian Ambassador in Sri Lanka, Mikhail G. Karpov as the chief guest. |
