PM to open national e-government parley

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will inaugurate Sri Lanka's first-ever national e-government conference on May 9 at the BMICH.

It is organised by the Ministry of Economic Reform, Science and Technology (MERST) in collaboration with The Information and Communication Technology Cluster with support from The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through The Competitiveness Initiative (TCI) and the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).

Indices up, turnover down

The Colombo Bourse closed trading yesterday on a favourable note with the ASPI increasing to 826.2 points from 823.1 and the Milanka to 1,431.7 from 1,421.6 points the previous day.

However, the turnover for the day decreased to Rs.76.45 million from Rs.112.2 the previous day.

Stockbrokers said that this was after an initial burst in buying particularly in Commercial Bank and DFCC shares.

Large volumes of Grain Elevators, Asian Hotels, Vanik Incorporation Limited and Distilleries changed hands during the day.

The top five gainers for the day were Hunters, Browns Beach, Vanik Incorporation, Ceylon Holiday and Blue Diamonds.

Breakfast Meeting on recent Fiscal Reforms

A Breakfast Meeting titled "Recent Fiscal Reforms" will be held on May 13 from 8 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. at the Galle Face Hotel.

The presentation will highlight recent Policy reforms, Legislative reforms and Administrative reforms. Special reference will be made to Exoneration law (commonly referred to as Amnesty Law). The guest speaker at the presentation will be N. R. Gajendran.

Gajendran, Senior Partner of Gajma and Co., is the Chairman of the Taxation Committee and Company law and other Legislation Committees of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka. He is also the former Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Taxpayers' Association of Sri Lanka.

Gajendran also delivered the Inaugural Annual tax Oration at the Institute of Chartered Accountants on 'Taxpayer Rights and Remedies'. He authored and presented a paper on 'Rights and Obligations of Taxpayers and Revenue Officers' at the Commonwealth Association for Tax Administrators (CATA).

The workshop is targeted at CEOs and Finance Directors of Companies. The presentation is organised by the European Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka.
