Yasith Mihiranga Maithripala of D.S. Senanayake College and Jayathu Neelaweera of Sri Sumangala, Panadura caused two sensational shocks to win the Observer-Bata Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Contest All-Island and Outstation Contest respectively after votes were counted on coupon No. 12.

Both Mihiranga Maithripala and Jayathu Neelaweera received almost identical number of votes - Mihiranga Maithripala getting 7,482 votes on Coupon No. 12 in the All-Island Contest - that improved on the previous eleven weeks voting that totalled 7,093 votes, while Neelaweera got 7,503 votes on coupon No. 12 and he too improved on the total eleven weeks voting which was 6,266 votes.

The sensational support for both Mihiranga Maithripala and Jayathu Neelaweera ousted the two front runners - Sisil de Silva of St. Benedict's College and Roshan Abeyratne of St. Anne's College, Kurunegala in the All-Island and Outstation Contests who appeared to have a strong hold on the titles at the end of voting on coupon No. 11.

At the end of the penultimate week's voting (that's coupon No. 11) Sisil de Silva led in the All-Island Contest with 8,492 votes and with the 1,255 votes he received from coupon No. 12, had a total of 9,747 votes.

Roshan Abeyratne who led after the count on coupon No. 11 with 8,754 votes in the Outstation Contest, received 1,337 votes from coupon No. 12 to have a total of 10,091 votes.

The sensational voting for Maithripala of D.S. Senanayake College and Jayathu Neelaweera of Sri Sumangala Panadura changed the entire voting pattern in just one week. The awards ceremony will be held shortly.
