by Sarath Malalasekera The Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka celebrated its second International Women's Day Programme recently at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall. Women's Affairs Minister Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake and Mrs. Srima Dissanayake were the chief guests. Irrigation and Water Management Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera and Irrigation Minister H.G.P. Nelson also participated. The theme of the programme was to felicitate the Women's Officers who have served more than 25 years to uplift living conditions of the Mahaweli settlers throughout the Mahaweli project areas, said Ms. Shanthini Kongahage, Consultant of the Women's Development of the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka. Ms. Kongahage who delivered the welcome speech pointed out her experiences gained in the Mahaweli. The Mahaweli Women officers are suited even for national awards because of their skills and hard work. The contribution by women to the national economy is considerable. It proves to us the women's contribution to the labour force, the Women's Affairs Minister said. The Government has taken measures for equal participation of women for the future development of the country. Mahaweli Development Projects have proved that women's participation is the need to participation of the family unit and society. In this context, the International Women's Day programme is a valuable event to motivate and encourage women officers, said Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera. Secretaries, Director General, Executive Directors, resident Project Managers, other senior and junior officers of the Ministries and Mahaweli Authority also participated. |
