Govt to recruit 3,000 nurses to overcome shortage

Hambantota special correspondent

The Government has taken action to recruit 3,000 nurses as a measure to overcome the dearth of nursing cadre in rural area hospitals. This will ease the dearth of nurses to a certain extent, said the Deputy Minister of Health, Sajith Premadasa addressing the gathering after laying the foundation stone for a school building at Hambantota Vidyalaya, Hambantota recently.

He said that it was his aim to uplift the educational standard of the Hambantota district by enhancing the infrastructure facilities as well as the human resources in schools of the district.

He said, "under Janasaviya Welfare Programme, he would construct 50 additional buildings for those schools which were congested. This will be done without spending a cent from the Government funds. All these buildings would be constructed with the assistance of the philanthropists who had come forward to assist in this meritorious act on my request. This is the 25th building in the series.

Rs. 14 million worth nutritional food items have been distributed todate among the pregnant mothers in the Hambantota district, the Deputy Minister added.

Principal, Hambantota Vidyalaya Mrs. Pushpa Wickramasingha also spoke.
