Sigiriya group correspondent World Vision has launched a rural welfare programme for the provision of drinking water and health and sanitary facilities in the Wilgamuwa Provincial Secretariat Division. According to the Area Development Officer about 800 families will be benefitted by these efforts. The officer said a sum of Rs. 14 lakhs has been allocated for constructing toilet facilities. He said even at this stage people do not use lavatories which cause severe environmental problems as well as personal health hazards, though there are natural water resources they have not been made safe for human consumption. Digging up wells, and areas where possible and distributing water through pipe lines have been designed. A few months earlier a similar drinking water scheme was inaugurated at Sulugune, which was commissioned for public use by the Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake. Along with this World Vision constructed a new road linking Sulugune and Galkanda, making easy access to Meemure, where the people mainly depend on agriculture. World Vision Zonal representative K.M. Ariyasinghe Banda said people in Minipe 3 and 4 stages too will be benefitted by the proposed drinking water scheme for which World Vision spends Rs. 60 lakhs. Vilgamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha too coordinating with the World Vision programmes of Rural Development. |
