by Sarath Malalasekera A five-member underworld gang were taken into custody by two special teams attahced to the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) in connection with the possession of a number of weapons in Mount Lavinia, Moratuwa and Balapitiya police areas. They were taken into custody in several raids conducted by the two special teams of officers of the CCD on Saturday afternoon. Two 9 mm pistols, two locally made galkatas, 35 3.8mm live ammunition, 12 bore cartridges and several other types of ammunition were among the items seized by the CCD officials. The CCD teams are conducting investigations to ascertain whether these suspects, now in police custody, are involved in any other criminal activities committed in the recent past in the country. Investigations are being directed by Colombo DIG Bodhi Liyanage and conducted by CCD Director SP Sarath Lugoda assisted by Chief Inspector Nuwan Wedasinghe, OIC,CCD. Director Lugoda appealed to the public to inform them about any criminal activities carried out by underworld gangs in any part of the country to the nearest police station or on telephone numbers 662323, 333507, 662311. The same two CCD teams have been deployed to arrest several other suspects who are alleged to have been involved in a number of criminal activities with the suspects now in custody, director Lugoda said. |
