Kandy set to stage second Test

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Correspondent

Kandy District Cricket Association is all set to stage the second cricket test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand which is scheduled to be played at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy from May 3rd to May 7th.

With evening showers being experienced in Kandy, there is a lush growth of grass in the outfield. A perimeter fence is being constructed on the far side of the ground.

National Curator and former Sri Lanka cricketer Anuruddha Polonnowita was at the Asgiriya Stadium recently to inspect the ground arrangements.

The Secretary of the Kandy District Cricket Association Janaka Pathirana said that there has been a good response for the high priced tickets. Already a good number of tickets for the grand stand has been sold, but the actual rush should start just a couple of days before the test match.

Pathirana said that the tickets have been priced at Rs. 200 (grand stand) Rs. 50 (covered stands) and Rs. 20 (open terraces). In addition to this cricket playing schools in Kandy will be provided with 50 complimentary tickets per school for the schoolboys to watch the match. Kandy Police headed by the Deputy Inspector General Nimal Mediwake, SSP Kandy Gunatilake Bandara, HQI Chief Inspector Edmund Mahendran along with the General Committee of the Kandy District GA will discuss today - April 23 the security aspects for the match.
