Joint opposition insists on LTTE renouncing violence

The joint opposition in a statement yesterday on the suspension of the current peace talks called upon the government to insist on the LTTE that it makes a public declaration renouncing all forms of threat, duress and violence as a condition for continuing talks.

It also insists that the decommissioning issue should be unequivocally stated to be 'an indispensable part of the process of negotiation'.

The joint opposition statement said it did not approve of the exclusive process of consultation that is presently being conducted between the government and the LTTE under the auspices of the Norwegian Government. They have called for fuller and wider participation in the on going talks of those who have legitimate claims to voice the aspirations of the various communities and all sections.

The opposition parties also favour a process of National consultation on the resolution of the conflict the statement signed by the SLFP, JVP, NUA, MEP, CP, DPLF and Ceylon Workers Alliance, adds.
