Kandy SC play host to Kurunegala RFC by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports correspondent The defending Caltex League 'A' Division champions Kandy Sports Club will open their rugby season with a match against Kurunegala Rugby Football Club in an 'A' Division Caltex Inter Club Rugby tournament match to be played at Nittawela on Sunday - April 27th, commencing at 5.15 p.m. This match was earlier scheduled to be played on Saturday but has been put off by a day as it is customary for the kandy SC to play their matches on Sundays. Kurunegala RFC will be making their re-appearance at top level rugby after a lapse of several years and their participation in the premier rugby tournament augurs well for the future of rugby in the outstations. Kurunegala RFC are an unknown quantity but they are expected to give a good fight against the rugby giants in the local rugby scene. Kandy Sports Club will be led by that crack Sri Lanka centre Sajith Mallikarachchi who could also fit into the position of stand off if the necessity arises. It must be recalled that Sajith Mallikarachchi first played for Kandy as a fly half and later fell back into the centre berth. Kandy Sports Club will be strengthened by that burly West Samoan Tavita 'Laga' Tulagese who is likely to play in the front row. They will have the services of another West Samoan centre Itache Thema who is now domiciled in New Zealand and plays top level club rugby there. Kandy SC will go into this match without the services of Sri Lanka players Asoka Jayasena, Sameera Silva and Radhika Hettiarachchi who are on the injured list but their leader is well stocked and will have the services of stalwarts like Dunstan de Silva, Mohammed Buksh, Jeewa Galgamuwa, Saranath Hettiarachchi, Pradeep Basnayake, Sean Wijesinghe, Niranjan Ranasinghe, Kapila Silva, Amjad Buksh, Nalaka Weerakoddy, Nilfer Ibrahem, Chamara Withanage, Sanjeewa Jayasinghe, Indrajith Bandaranayake, Malith Silva, Chaminda Yapa, Sanjeewa Bogodawatte, P. Duminda, Kavinda Jayasena, Dilip Selvam, Ashan Cooray, Isanka Hettiarachchi and Nuwan Welagedera from whom the final team will be selected. |
