Colombo Port March transshipment volumes up

In March 2003 the Port of Colombo has handled 115,884 TEUs of transshipment containers recording a growth of 23.6% as against the volumes handled in March 2002, the SLPA stated in a press release.

The total container throughput handled during March 2003 was 166,342 TEUs signifying a growth of 16.7% as against the total throughput handled during March 2002.

The surge in volumes at the Port of Colombo is attributed to the productivity enhancement measures combined with the aggressive marketing approach adopted by the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) and South Asia Gateway Terminal (SAGT) providing world class container terminal facilities.

In a bid to boost its image as the pre-eminent load centre (hub) of South Asia on the advice of Rauf Hakeem, Minister of Ports Development and Shipping, Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Parakrama Dissanayake has been spearheading a program to boost service delivery to clients, the release stated.
