Indo-Bangladesh ties will grow: Indian PM DHAKA, March 27 (AFP) - Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has said ties with neighbouring Bangladesh will grow with "goodwill and understanding" by both countries, the official BSS news agency reported here Thursday. In a message to his counterpart Khaleda Zia to mark Bangladesh's Independence and National Day on Wednesday, Vajpayee said "the two countries enjoy traditional ties and friendship." "I am confident that with goodwill and understanding, and the consistent efforts of both countries, our friendship and cooperation will continue to grow for our mutual benefit," Vajpayee said. His message comes against a backdrop of recent tensions over New Delhi's threat to expel alleged illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. In January, India announced a drive to deport millions of Bangladeshis it said were in its territory illegally and could pose a security threat. The two countries share a porous 4,000-kilometre (2,500-mile) border. India backed Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan, in its 1971 war of independence. |
