Battle of Sri Jayawardenapura begins today

The 13th annual Battle of Sri Jayawardenapura between traditional rivals St. John's College Nugegoda and Ananda Sastralaya Kotte will be played on Saturday and Sunday at the R. Premadasa Stadium.

Ananda Sastralaya will be captained by fourth year coloursman and left arm spinner Sandakelum Perera. Third year coloursman Dinesh Chaturanga will be his deputy. Perera has captured 35 wickets and Caturanga has proved his all round capabilities scoring over 350 runs and claiming over 35 wickets.

Wicket keeper batsman Sagara Wijemanna is another third year coloursman who has scored over 500 runs and held on to 35 victims behind the stumps. Last years Big Match centurian Saranga Perera will be hoping for a repeat performance and will be a key player in their batting line up. Rohan Laksiri too has been consistent this year with a total of over 400 runs and 45 wickets.

This year Ananda Sastralaya defeated St. Mary's Kegalle by seven wickets and lost to Asoka MV by five wickets.

St. John's College will be led by all rounder Lahiru Perera with Udaya Kumara as his deputy. Lahiru Perera returned best figures of 5 for 16 against Carey College and took three for 35 against Aluthgama MV. Udaya Kumara has two half centuries to his credit against Buddhagosha MV and Sir John Kotelawala MV.

Lahiru Hasantha is the only centurian in the side having compiled a superb 105 against Buddhagosha MV. In addition Thanuja Shahan has scored three half centuries in the current season against Aluthgama MV, Lalith Athulathmudali MV and Buddhagosha MV.
